Canadian Film Industry Performer Knowledge Hub.
Starting RIGHT NOW, you have equal access the industry’s collective knowledge, ensuring you have all the wisdom you need prior-to, during, and after your bookings to do your very best work.
Want more bookings?
The solution is simple…

Agents, casting professionals, and on-set departments alike have all expressed that they seek out performers for their film sets that are highly knowledgeable, professional, and easy to work with

Good news! These traits can all be learned!

Performer training provides you with the knowledge you need to do your best work: be confident, professional, and desirable to work with. This applies to everyone, from the background actors to the leading actors and everyone in between.
There’s simply no substitute for knowledge.
But there’s a problem . . .

"Traditional performer education is broken"
In the traditional model the point of contact for the performer (the agent or trainer) gets their “talking points” for training from casting in the form of memos, requests, and most commonly, complaints from on-set departments.
The whole traditional performer training system is built like a vertical chain of command, focused on reacting to negative feedback.

Everyone passes the feedback (blame, typically) down the chain, changing the message as necessary to cover themselves, in which case it usually reaches the performer (you) as “corrective feedback”. This is what is commonly practiced in the industry as “training”.

Worst part is that at times this feedback doesn’t even make its way back to you, so you might not even know there are improvements you could be working on.

There is a ‘Knowledge Gap’ between what performers need to know, and what they are actually being taught.
It’s no wonder that most performers are not truly ready for set.

Is there a solution to this problem?

Yes, there is!

Revolutionary Idea
The traditional performer training model needed to be re-envisioned so that performers could receive the education they needed as positive, proactive, advice directly from the sources

So that’s exactly what we did.

We created a system to source timely, complete, and consistent performer education directly from the individual representative departments of every film region in Canada. We organized this information into a central "Knowledge Hub" where performers like you, would have an equal opportunity to access it, no matter your level of experience, your agency, or your contacts.
It's performer education built for today's filming environment.
Developed with the help of EVERY film department.
Over the course of a year, we interviewed film industry professionals across Canada; from every filming region and film department, building the most comprehensive database of knowledge for performers in our industry.

Now performers like YOU have a unique opportunity for the first time ever to learn directly from every film department…
  •  Assistant Directors
  •  Background Coordinators
  •  Casting Directors
  •  Props Department
  •  Payroll Companies
  •  Film & TV Agents
  •  Wardrobe Department
  •  Hair Department
  •  Makeup Department
...and from the best in the biz!
You’ll be learning from Emmy Award winners, Leo Award winners, directors of the industry’s largest companies and on-set professionals from our most successful feature films and TV series.
I’ve added a few pointers that my favorite BG performers do for us in the props department, that always impress!

  • Ultimate Performer Set Kit – Based on years of collective film industry experience from professionals in every department, we've constructed the ultimate Performer Set Kit. This is a MUST HAVE for all talent to ensure a smooth, enjoyable day on set every time. Some of these items will prove to be a life-saver during a critical moment on set!
 REEL 102 | BOOKING IT!
  • The Booking Process - A complete behind-the-scenes look at the booking process from the view point of an agent and a casting director (something you should probably know if you want bookings).
  • Booking Categories – Not all bookings are created equal! Understand the differences between the various booking categories for film industry performers.
  • Before saying “Yes” – We’ll cover important booking notes regarding location, availability, continuity, night shoots, wardrobe, hair, makeup, props, pets, minors, vehicle bookings, allergies, limitations, nude scenes, and the dreaded rain towers so that you can avoid many uncomfortable situations.
  • Accepting The Booking – The 4 things you need to do immediately after accepting a booking to save yourself any unnecessary headaches or embarrassment.
 REEL 103 | CALLTIMES
  • Calltimes Email – This is the single most important tool for performers to ensure they arrive on time, and prepared; so we've dedicated an entire module to reading the call times email properly.
  • Prelims Vs Finals Vs Crew – The most common way that performers get themselves into trouble is by not showing up at the correct time. We explain all three times inside calltimes emails and how they affect you as a performer.
  • The 24 Hr Clock – Do you know how to read one? If not, you will need to prior to going to work in this industry. We’ll teach you how in less than 5 minutes.
  • Complete Email Breakdown – There’s a LOT of important information delivered in a call times email and it can be daunting, even downright confusing. Confusion leads to stress and mistakes. To save you from that, we’ve broken down a typical calltimes email so you can read one like a pro from day one! (Including those artsy production maps!)
REEL 104 | ARRIVING ON SET
  • Camera Ready – Includes insider notes from top hair, makeup, wardrobe and props professionals explaining how to look like a total pro and make all the beauty departments super happy by arriving on set ‘camera ready’.
  • The Final Checklist – A printable checklist that will ensure you have everything important packed for your day on set.
  • Travel Planning - We share a great tool for planning the route and timing of your travel to ensure that you always arrive on time, whether you’re driving or taking public transportation. The degree to which you follow the advice in this section alone will greatly determine how enjoyable and stress-free the rest of your day on set will go!
  • Arriving On Set – Our ‘tour video’ will cover all the basics of arriving on set, including all the things you should do, in order, as soon as you arrive to set.
  • Sign-In Forms – We cover how to fully and properly fill in your sign-in paperwork (union and non-union), so that you don’t miss anything that would jeopardize getting paid in a timely manner.
REEL 105 | WORKING ON SET
  • Set Amenities – Get the full lay of the land as we cover all the on-set amenities that you are likely have access to as a performer (including their weird industry names for them).
  • Key People – You’ll be working with a LOT of folks on set, and there will be even more departments outside your sphere of contact. Know who you should and should not approach for each situation.
  • Performance – It’s your turn to perform! What do you do? This one’s a biggie. We will dive deeply into different cues, silent action, counting beats and the super important concept of continuity so that you will know exactly what you need to do when all eyes are upon you!
  • Progression of a Film Take – Working on set can seem like chaos! We’ll declutter the noise through an entertaining video that takes you through the progression of an entire film take so that you can tune in your ear to the cues that matter most to you.
  • Pro Tips! – We’ve compiled the very best advice from all the on-set departments to help you be a total pro, setting yourself apart from the other performers.
 REEL 106 | SET SAFETY

  • Extreme Temperatures – Extreme highs and lows are common on film sets across Canada (especially those dangerously lows). You will learn from this module the range of symptoms for each, as well as techniques to deal with them, so that you can make knowledgeable decisions about your health during a film shoot in extreme temperatures.
  • Propane Heaters – Propane heaters are used on sets to keep performers warm. They are also one of the leading causes of serious injuries. Learn the complete ins and outs of working around propane heaters, to keep yourself safe and comfortable.

  • Agency Commissions – VERY IMPORTANT: In some provinces agents cannot charge commissions on ALL of your income. We provide THE list of what an agent can and cannot charge commission on to ensure that you do not give up more earnings than you owe.
  • Cheque Issues – We cover how to help avoid these situations and the proper steps to take to rectify each issue if they do arise – especially important if you were not booked through an agent.
  • Tax Time – Everything related to all of your T4A’s. You will likely get more than one, and you need to claim them all. We also show how to leverage your performer tax deductions to save money during tax time (this section alone can return your investment in this program).

  • Booking categories - The differences between general bookings, photo doubles, special ability, and stand-in gigs; as well what type of talent that typically books them.
  • Prior to accepting – We teach performers to know the details before they jump to 'yes' about a booking opportunity, so that they FULLY understand their commitment.  We cover notes about: location, availability, continuity, night shoots, wardrobe, hair, makeup, props, pets, minors, vehicle bookings, allergies, limitations, nude scenes, and rain towers.
  • Accepting bookings – Once a performer accepts a booking, we teach them write down notes right away about their booking, schedule it in their calendars, and start some preliminary prep to ensure they have everything they committed to for the booking (like digging that prom dress out of storage well ahead of the booking!).
  • Call times email & your call time  - The call times email is the single most important tool for performers to arrive on time, and prepared; that's why we've dedicated an entire module to reading the call times email properly.

  • Typical call times email breakdown - We cover everything from identifying the production name and work date, to individual call time (vs crew call), booking role, parking, sign in location, contact, booking notes, how to read production maps and the importance of reviewing all attachments (reference photos, safety bulletins, legal tender, etc)
  • Being ready the night before - how to be fully packed, prepared and worry free for the morning, including having the travel route and timing figured out (we also cover how to properly use Google's Trip Planner Tool to figure out realistic travel times with both car and transit travel based on location and estimated delays).
  • Camera ready - What it means to arrive 'camera ready', including department notes from wardrobe, hair, makeup and props (your performers will all look like pros on day one!)
  • Travel planning - Everything runs smoother when performers arrive, prepared, complete, and on time. We'll cover how to appropriately budget travel time as well as a complete checklist of items to have packed prior to leaving the house.

  • How-to fill in sign-in forms properly (union and non-union) - One of the leading causes of on-set frustration with coordinators, as well as payroll accountants is improperly filled in paper work; so we've provided a complete guide to filling in forms properly.

  • Key people on set - an overview of the key people on set that performers will come into contact with, whom to approach for what, and whom NOT to approach.

Still have a question? We have you covered.
How will the SET READY™ course help my career?
Set Ready™ will take all of the guess work out of being a performer in the Canadian film industry. When you have completed the course, you will know exactly what you need before, during and after your bookings to do your best work in the industry. You will be equipped with downloads and resources to help expand your booking opportunities, organize your booking details and reduce mistakes. To top it off, all of the knowledge of Set Ready™ will always be accessible to your fingertips anytime, from any location (even from your mobile phone while you’re on a booking) like a trusted sidekick. It’s like having a mentor in your pocket with you wherever you are.

Would that be helpful to you and your career??
Do I have to take Set Ready™ to work in the industry?
Most on-set departments do require prerequisite training, which makes sense given the technical complexity of film production; however, at this time, it is not necessary to take any kind of training to be an entry level non-union performer in the industry. With that said, would you try to do any kind of job without first learning how? Set Ready™ is your personal training centre to break down all the complexities of film production so that you can do your best work!
Will this really make me more bookable?
Can we guarantee that you will be more bookable? No. There are just too many variables to consider. However, in the film industry, like in any other workplace, individuals want to work with others that are reliable, easy to work with and deliver the best possible results. Knowledge brings forth the wisdom, confidence and cooperation to be the individual that everyone wants to work with - in other words, be bookable.

What if I am NOT AT ALL tech savvy?
If you know how to send an email, you’ll have no issues. When you send an email you need to login to your email client (like Gmail) and click a message to read it, download files, and view photos and videos. In similar fashion you’d log into your Reel Academy dashboard, click on your desired lesson, read it, watch videos, and download optional resources. It’s that easy!
Do I have to download any software to use this training platform?
No. The course lives in the cloud (fancy talk for “its online”). This way you can access Set Ready™ anytime, from any location, on any device that has access to the internet.
How do I access the training?
As soon as you complete the form on the next page, Reel Academy will automatically send you an email with a link to the login screen. If this is your first time logging in, you’ll need to choose your username and password, which you’ll reuse when you want to log back in on a later date.
What devices can I use to access Set Ready™?
You can access the course on any desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile phone that have an internet connection.
How long will I have access to the course?
We’re giving you “lifetime access”, which means that you’ll have full unrestricted access to Set Ready™ for the life of the product
How long does it take to consume the entire SET READY™ course?
If you sat down with a huge cup of coffee and turned off all distractions, you could consume everything in a dedicated 4 hour sitting; however, we recommend that you take it slowly. You can consume it in as many bite-sized chunks as you want. Simply log back in and continue wherever you left off.
What if I’m not happy with my investment?
If for any reason you’re not 100% satisfied with your investment, then we do not deserve your money! I will give you back every red cent. Either you get the knowledge you need to do your best work in the first 30 days, or you get your money back. It’s that simple. I do not think you will need this option, but it’s there because I do not want anything holding you back from your full potential as a performer in this industry. If you want a refund, just send our team an email stating that you are not happy and we’ll refund your order; no questions and no hassle.

So you have NOTHING to lose and MUCH to gain.

I am an agent/casting director, do you offer Set Ready™ as an enterprise solution?
Yes we do! We have an enterprise level solution with a personalized admin dashboard that allows account owners to distribute and manage Set Ready™ access to their performers. There's also a built-in supervisor hierarchy, training analytics, and even a track-able certification system where performers need to answer quizzes along the way before they achieve a Set Ready™ Certification. If you're interested in bringing the entire Set Ready course into your agency/casting house, please send our team an email at: achieve@reelacademy.com to discuss this opportunity.
What if I still have more questions?
No worries. Simply send us a support email to achieve@reelacademy.com.
